In this blog, we’re going to cover all things teeth whitening! Teeth Whitening is a really common procedure that makes a huge difference to someone’s smile. Today, on the market there are many teeth whitening options, some better than others. You’ll likely have heard of most such as teeth whitening strips, DIY teeth whitening methods, teeth whitening pens and dental teeth whitening at home.
What is teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is the cosmetic procedure of removing stains and whitening natural teeth. This is done in slightly different ways depending on what style of whitening you opt for. The dental-approved method is ‘bleaching’ with a hydrogen peroxide gel. This draws out the staining of the teeth without damaging the tooth structure itself. This method is usually done over some time to build up the brightness. We always recommend whitening through your dentist, to ensure the chemicals used are safe for your teeth, we will cover a little later why DIY whitening might not be a good option for you.

The cost of teeth whitening varies based on the dentist, but as a general range, you may be looking at paying anywhere from £300-£600. Most dentists will offer teeth whitening home kits to be completed at home or a mix of in-chair and at-home treatment.
How long does professional teeth whitening last?
Professional teeth whitening with a dentist last around 6-12 months, but the longevity of your result is reliant on your dental hygiene level and the amount of staining food/drinks you consume. Once you have your whitening treatment you can top yourself up throughout the year!
DIY whitening.
There are many different types of ‘do-it-yourself’ whitening options available. They range in efficiency, but ultimately some can be damaging to your teeth. Options like teeth whitening strips or home teeth whitening kits may not be so harmful to you as long as the chemicals used are safe for your teeth. It’s important to note that whitening without a customized tray can give extremely varied results. Abrasive options like charcoal whitening powder damage the tooth’s enamel and can make your teeth more sensitive.
Whilst cheap teeth whitening is more desirable, we truly recommend consulting your dentist, whether you want teeth whitening at home, or teeth whitening at the dental practice, they can help you. It’s so important to remember your dental health is your number 1 priority.
