How long does it really take for Invisalign to work? A popular question about Invisalign and one we’re going to answer now! There’s always plenty of questions when it comes to teeth straightening, let’s get straight into it.

Firstly, what is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a newer method of teeth straightening that involves wearing plastic aligners that apply pressure to the teeth, as opposed to attaching wires that can be tightened. The aligners are kept tight by applying small, tooth coloured attachments to the teeth to apply additional pressure to certain teeth that may require it. You will change your Invisalign aligners every 10 days to increase pressure.  Invisalign is typically preferred by many people as it is far more discreet, you are responsible for changing your aligners and therefore this means less dentist check ups and you can eat whatever you like during your treatment! However, when comparing Invisalign vs braces for clinical results is not so easy to compare, as this will depend on your particular case, for more complex cases, including ones with misaligned bite you may be referred for fixed, metal braces as opposed to Invisalign. It’s worth noting though, that for simple to moderate cases Invisalign is usually suggested due to the predictability of the treatment plan with Invisalign’s new technology.

Factors Affecting Invisalign Treatment Duration:

Severity of Misalignment: The complexity of your orthodontic issues plays a significant role in determining how long Invisalign treatment will take. Minor misalignments may require a shorter treatment period, while more severe cases can take longer.

Compliance: Adhering to your orthodontist’s instructions is crucial for the success of Invisalign. Failing to wear your aligners for the recommended 20-22 hours per day can extend the treatment duration.

Number of Aligners: The total number of aligners in your treatment plan also influences the timeframe. Typically, you’ll switch to a new set of aligners every one to two weeks, with each set making gradual adjustments to your teeth.

Your Body’s Response: How your teeth respond to the aligners is unique to each individual. Some people may experience faster progress due to their teeth’s adaptability, while others may require more time.

How long does Invisalign treatment last?
The answer unfortunately is a little vague, because of course it will depend on the complexity of your case, however there are some general guidelines. Most cases are completed within 7 months of Invisalign treatment, which is often less than with traditional metal braces. While some extremely light cases of Invisalign may last for up to 3 months, we usually see people fitting within the second band of treatment which typically lasts 3-7 months. If you have a more complex case of overcrowding it may be that you require treatment that does last longer than 7 months, but until you have your scans taken it is a little hard to predict!

How does Invisalign work?
Invisalign is an incredibly clever advancement in the teeth straightening world. Firstly your dentist will scan your teeth, with a piece of equipment called an iTero scanner, this scanner takes detailed imaging of your teeth, creating a 3D model of your teeth digitally. This replaces the need for physical impressions, that’s got to be good news, right? The clever technicians and dentists at Invisalign, along with fantastic artificial intelligence, then create a treatment plan based on your current alignment with the predicted outcome. Before you approve you can see how the position of your teeth change with every single aligner you will wear.  Once you have approved this treatment plan, your aligners are created based solely on your treatment plan, so you can rest assured that you are beginning with the end in mind.

Does Invisalign really work?

When it comes to Invisalign, reviews speak for themselves. Opting to have teeth straightening as an adult has increased and that’s thought to largely be down to the new method offered by Invisalign. A recent North American survey found that 96% of people were satisfied with their Invisalign treatment with 9 out of 10 patients suggesting they’d recommend it to others considering teeth straightening.
