You’ve probably heard of Invisalign, it’s a revolutionary product for teeth straightening; it boasts typically shorter treatment times and much easier use. Nowadays when a dentist is asked whether they prefer Invisalign or braces, they often opt for Invisalign.

You may be thinking this sounds too good to be true, does Invisalign work? Yes, absolutely. Invisalign has quickly been adopted as the best method of teeth straightening for the average case.

Gone are the days of old impressions, Invisalign uses a digital scanner to create a 3D model of your teeth virtually, which is used to predict your tooth movement.

Let’s take a look at 8 tips for new Invisalign users below to make your experience with Invisalign a good one!

Tip 1: Take Paracetamol

When your clear aligners are first fitted there will be a sensation of tightness, to help deal with this your dentist will advise you to take paracetamol, this will help with Invisalign pain.

Tip 2: Invisalign chewies

Invisalign chewies are small objects you can chew on and they help to position the aligner closer to your teeth, which is beneficial to your treatment. They can also help to reduce Invisalign pain as they promote a better fit of aligners.

You can buy these on amazon, just search for: Invisalign chewies.

Tip 3: Make sure you’re brushing and flossing

Using an aligner can increase your risk of harmful bacteria building up within your mouth. The risk of this can easily be reduced by remaining on top of general care. It is suggested that you brush your teeth after eating before putting your aligners back in, with this additional cleaning you will maintain a better level of dental hygiene.

Tip 4: Use the Invisalign cleaning crystals

If you need to remove staining on your Invisalign aligner use the special cleaning crystals within your Invisalign pack, remember to read the instructions! Clear aligners are meant to be exactly that so keeping them clean and removing stains is essential.

Tip 5: Change your aligners on time

This may be a bit of an obvious one, but make sure you are changing your Invisalign aligner at the right times, we recommend keeping a diary and writing a note on the days you need to change your aligner.

Tip 6: Make sure you’re wearing it for 20-22 hours

During your Invisalign attachments fit your dentist should tell you about the wear time. It’s important to keep wearing your Invisalign aligners for 20-22 hours a day as this will help your teeth move as they should and reduce the pain of movement.

Tip 7: Drink only clear liquids when you’re wearing your retainers

Keeping to water whilst wearing your Invisalign aligner is important. Any coloured drinks will stain your aligner and can be tricky to remove. In addition to this, drinking sugary/flavoured drinks can also add to the bacteria build-up in your mouth. Let’s be honest, it will also help you drink a lot more water, which your body will thank you for!

Tip 8: Adjust your retainers

It is not uncommon for the Invisalign aligner to irritate your gums a little. Your mouth isn’t used to having an aligner in and therefore we see some patients who have some discomfort with the aligner rubbing. If this doesn’t settle in a few days, you can visit your dentist for them to smoothen the edges of the aligner.

We hope these tips have helped you. It’s important to remember that Invisalign pain, especially at the beginning of your treatment is not uncommon. It often takes a few days for your mouth to settle, but with the use of over-the-counter pain medication and the advice from your dentist, you’ll be back to normal in no time!

Top tip- If you’ve only just started your treatment be sure to take a before photo, as comparing you’re before and after Invisalign results are incredibly satisfying.
