Common Reasons For Porcelain Veneers Replacement
March 14, 2022
Why would veneers be removed? This is a really common question when it comes to veneers, as with any dental treatment, veneers have a lifespan, and whilst porcelain may last up to 15-20 years, you may have to replace your veneers. Can veneers be removed easily? Veneers should only be removed by your dentist, they will use a special tool that will be able to cut through your veneer uncovering your natural tooth. To replace them they will simply begin prepping teeth for veneers again and start working on designing your new smile to be fit soon after.
Firstly, what are veneers?
There are two types of veneers, composite veneers (also known as resin veneers) and porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are also known as permanent veneers because they have the best longevity of all veneer materials. As we mentioned above porcelain veneers, if well looked after can last for up to 15-20 years, for those with composite veneers are likely to see around 5 years with them. In this blog, we’ll be focusing on porcelain veneers and replacing them with new porcelain veneers or crowns.
Why would you need your veneers removed or replaced?
1. Our first and most obvious reason is they’ve simply outstayed their welcome! Porcelain veneers have fantastic durability, but even porcelain deteriorates and needs replacing. You may notice your veneers have become cracked or chipped. This is a sign to get them replaced, especially if you’ve had them for a long time.
2. Your gums are receding. Whilst you can have veneers with gum recession, when your gums recede and you have porcelain veneers it can be obvious to see where the veneers start and the gum ends, exposing uncovered tooth surface area. Visually, people don’t like this as their tooth colour and veneer colour are unlikely to match. You can have veneers refitted to accommodate the recession, your dentist can opt for the same shapes to keep your smile familiar but extend the length up. It’s also worth saying here that if you do notice your gums pulling back or receding you need to visit your dentist to discuss why this is. Commonly this happens to those with poor dental hygiene, gingivitis or gum disease.
3. The underlying teeth have decay. Porcelain veneers are tightly fitted to the front surface of the tooth, however, it is possible that the veneer can come away from the tooth slightly allowing bacteria to build beneath it. If this does happen and you feel your veneer is loose speak to your dentist as they may be able to rectify this before having to fit another. It is also possible that decay within the tooth can cause you to need more extensive treatment such as a crown.
How much does veneer replacement cost?
The approximate veneer cost will vary depending on what dentist you visit. Typically porcelain veneers cost around £700 per tooth. To have your veneers refitted will usually cost the same as starting again, and this is because the same procedure of design, preparation and creation will still occur.
When it comes to replacing your veneers we suggest getting back in touch with the practice that fitted them or doing a quick google search for dental veneers near me, you can then start doing some research on the local providers and see which one fits your needs.
Remember, always check out the reviews of the dentist to get a feel for the practice
